Why are vertical scrollbars on the right side of windows?

In the earliest PARC window systems, Smalltalk and Interlisp-D, scrollbars were on the left, then the ViewPoint and GlobalView environments of Xerox Star workstations moved scrollbars to the right.

These late 1990s papers explain why but the first one has an inaccuracy: on Interlisp-D scrollbars couldn't be made to appear on the right.

So like a whole year ago I was ranting about how corporate red tape was preventing us spending a few thousand euros in hardware upgrades and causing untold tens of thousands in euros in cascading technical issues

Soon after I made that post, the price of ram skyrocketed. So obviously we never got sufficient upgrades. And people are currently posting in the technical group chat about how no-one can log into the shared server they need to do their job because the system is deadlocked under ram shortage.

The moral of the story is "corporations are penny-wise pound-foolish to a tragicomic degree", I guess

I've had two e-mail / data / internet companies fold and four social media platforms fold, that forced me to start from scratch. I lost a lot of personal data, contacts and correspondence as well as docs, photos & links.

I consider it house cleaning now - especially with all the data center sifting going on now.

Sucked at the time but all is good now. I've killed more accounts in recent years than I've kept.

It's a bit more complicated than that. In Canada we have a lot of song birds becoming extinct thanks to outdoor cats. These owners like cats because they can let them out and forget about them. Meanwhile, the cat is burying its poop in YOUR garden and it's dangerous to your health.
